medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There is a pretty neat book by a woman named Cruz, which was published, I
believe, in the 1990's or thereabouts. It's not a super scholarly book, you
could get it at Barnes and Noble or amazon.com, but it might be a little
extra thing for you, as it's got a lot of pictures in it.
I personally have a relic of St. Jannuaris of Naples, who was tossed
headfirst into an oven in the 300s, but when that didn't kill him he was
beheaded. They still have 2 vials of his blood in the Cathedral that boil up
every September 19 (his feast day) and his head preserved there...(how I do
love being Catholic!!) . These vials have been scientifically tested but
they can't prove why it does this. It didn't do it during plague one year
and during WWII.
My relic also will protect me against the dangers of Mount Vesuvius, and
since I haven't been hit by erupting rock/lava yet, it must be working (and
the fact that I am in Boston, MA, USA has nothing to do with that
either...). I got it for $4 at his festival in Little Italy, NY, a few years
ago.
