medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
the association of Nicholas with hospitals rings some kind of bell,
IIRC the "Domus Dei", the pilgrim hospital / hospice in Portsmouth (founded
c.1212) was dedicated to St Nicholas, but since the church is within sight
of the sea, this might be because St Nicholas is the sailors' patron. From
the Reformation until the 1941 blitz it was the Royal Garrison Church but it
is now partly roofless. The chancel is still functioning, however and used
from time to time by the local Greek Orthodox congregation. The building is
in the care of English Heitage and it is well worth a visit. It is almost
the only bit of mediaeval Portsmouth to survive.
