In my unit we have about 50+ protocols for loads of
different conditions, at the end of which the nurse
may decide on a prescription, which is presigned on a
6 monthly basis by myself. The nurse "writes it" and
has responsibility for following the protocol, we have
a seperate cardex to track them.
It works very well and the nurses generally make a
grand job of things. They are also far more consistant
- which as Dr's we ain't!
Personally, given the low incidence of problems with
most drugs, I see no problem with this and hence the
formulary is fairly extensive.
We have had 0 complications in 3 years (touch wood etc
etc)
