medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
>From: Dennis Martin <[log in to unmask]>
<snippage of discussion of Pius XII and Pius IX's canonization process>
>What changed? A blatant political attack on Pius XII, stemming largely
>from his anti-Communism and a major shift in the general perception of
>traditional Catholicism in the wake of the sexual revolution of the 1960s
>(whose roots lie in the eugenics movement of the 1920s).
Pardon me while I delurk here momentarily ....
Your sentence ...
"a major shift in the general perception of traditional Catholicism in the
wake of the sexual revolution of the 1960s (whose roots lie in the eugenics
movement of the 1920s)"
... interests me. Would you mind explicating more on the connection between
the sexual revolution of the 1960's and the eugenics movement of the 1920's?
This digresses perhaps a bit too much for a medieval-religion list; I don't
mind if you reply privately to me. However, after we discuss this a bit
further, we could work it more to the medieval period by a discussion of
birth control -- either discussion of church doctrines and teachings on this
(if any), and what historians know of actual contraceptive and abortifacient
practices in usage in whatever European country of our choice. (Unless this
group has already discussed this topic & I'm not aware of it.)
Thank you,
