medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Colleagues,
Thanks for the previously provided information.
I am currently reading (just begun actually)
_Saint-Denis de 1760 à nos jours_ and several
questions have cropped up as well as some interesting
information. With your permission, I'll ask a question
I have right now and get back to the list later with
items that may be of interest. (I may even find out
why Louis VI did not choose to be buried there.) I do
recall that despite his (alleged - Lindy Grant
disputes this fact)great friendship with Suger, he was
angry that Suger was elected abbot without his
permission.
Back to my question: the book mentions two "jubés"
involved in the monks' chanting practices prior to the
Revolution. *Two* rood screens? This seems odd to me
unless "jubé" has a meaning I'm unaware of. I thought
a rood screen ran from north to south, separating the
clergy from the laity and that monks faced each other
across the choir with their backs to the north and
south sides of the choir. The book implies that the
monks had their backs to two "jubés" during Office.
Any enlightenment?
MG
