is this the reason why he was chosen to be the patron of the great
17th-18th cc "Congregation" which bears his name and which was responsible for
a remarkable revival of the Benedictine Order --and, coincidentally (via
Mabillon, et al.), the foundation of modern medieval studies?

my understanding is that the center of the "Congregation de Saint-Maur" was at
Saint-Germain-des-Pres, but i've never heard why it took this particular saint
on as patron.
