medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. January) is the feast day of:
Tatiana of Rome (d. early 3rd cent.) Tatiana (Tania) was a Christian
virgin living in Rome, killed because of her beliefs. A cult of Tatiana
developed at an early age in the Russian and Greek churches as well as in
Italy.
Arcadius (d. c. 304) Arcadius has been removed from the calendar.
According to early reports, he was martyred rather gruesomely by having his
limbs hacked off, in Caesarea in Mauretania during the Great Persecution.
Caesaria the Elder (d. after 524) A sister of Caesarius of Arles, Caesaria
in c. 513 was made the first abbess of the convent of Arles by her brother.
Benedict Biscop (d. 689) Benedict (he only adopted this name later) was
born in 628, the son of Northumbrian nobles. He traveled twice to Rome and
then in 666 became a monk at Lerins in France. Benedict returned to
England in 669, and founded there the monasteries of Wearmouth and Jarrow
(he was the first abbot of Wearmouth). He visited Rome a total of five
times, bringing back with him manuscripts, relics, and other treasures.
Volkhold (blessed) (d. 1041) Volkhold was a Tyrolian nobleman. He
converted his castle of Suanapurk (Sonnenburg) into a nunnery, and he
himself lived as a hermit in a hut.
Aelred of Rievaulx (d. 1167) Aelred, born in c. 1110 in Hexham (England),
became a monk in 1134 at the Cistercian monastery of Rievaulx. In 1147 he
was elected abbot. Under Aelred's rule, Rievaulx became a center of the
Cistercian order in England, and Aelred himself won fame as a spiritual
writer. After Aelred's death, a strong regional cult developed, and he was
canonized in 1191. The Cistercian order celebrates his feast day on 3.
February.
