medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
May we broaden this discussion (for my benefit if for no one else's)?
I have wrestled with a early modern question concerning motivation for
a couple years now. After reading carefully the primary sources and a
lot of secondary material, I've decided that in my case the folks held
the motivations they said they held, even though that may not be the
most popular view in this instance. I've come to this position through
what is probably an inept slash with Ockham's razor (and through fatigue
induced by plowing through claims, counter-claims, rebuttals, rejoinders,
and reaffirmations in the secondary literature.)
In our discussion of canonization, we've discussed the motives of those
involved in the process. Is there some quick and easy way to discern
the motives of folks dead now these five centuries that I've overlooked?
Please, clue me in!
Regards,
Frank
