In the next release (due out very soon), the MapInfo mapping module works
much more closely with the HBSMR index, so you can filter for eg all Listed
Buildings of grade II status and then show them on the GIS. I agree that
there is a problem with any data set where there are many overlapping
polygons, eg where there are many overlapping activity/event polygons, but
separating the data into multiple layers is rarely a solution unless you are
happy to have eg events which occurred more than 10 years ago not showing on
the system.
Just one final note, things can be improved a little by very careful use of
transparent fills on polygons of different record types.

Subject: Re: Digitising monument polygons on GIS
Hi Tony
I have some sympathy with what Ingrid appears to be saying. Using the
mapping module for visual searching is confusing sometimes, especially if
you have numerous different events and monuments in a small area. Colouring
them differently helps, but is not the full answer, as inevitably some
things are masked by others. Also, the advantage of having different layers
would be that if all you wanted to look at was Listed Buildings, or Find
spots, you could.
I suppose one answer might to be create your own subsets of the mon & Event
etc tab as different tabs using queries to select all the findspots, for
example, so you could have this functionality, but the disadvantage of that
would be losing the live link to the text database.
