Dear Laura (& Susan!),
Finds Identification and Reporting of Treasure:
-Does your local museum have a finds identification form? Not that
I'm aware of!
-Do you routinely get copies of these forms? No.
-If not, what is your notification procedure? Informal contacts with
Museum staff (good working relationships with current and previous Keepers
of Archaeology).
-Are you contacted informally (by phone) or formally (via letter or
form?) Informally by phone and e-mail in first instance, additional
information by e-mail (images) or post follows initial contact.
Local Amateur Groups:
-Does anyone have anonymous online reporting procedures via email or
your
county website? No.
-Do these groups report their sites and find spots to you or do you
gather
the information from yearly reports? Yearly reports, in most cases.
The Treasure Act:
-How regularly does your coroner have inquests? Don't know!
Reporting is carried out via the museum and we are not directly involved.
-Does your coroner notify you of possible Treasure or us this done
via
museum officers? Via Museum staff.
I've forwarded your e-mail to Brett Thorn (who is the new Keeper of
Archaeology at Bucks County Museum) for him to add his comments from the
museum perspective.
Attached is the draft SMR reporting pro-forma I've developed for the Museum
to use. I haven't yet discussed it with Brett, although I did discuss it
with his predecessor.
