medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I thought no one would ever ask or care. When the Vikings came up the Loire
in the 860s, the monks of Glanfeuil, the large Loire monastery supposedly
founded by St. Maur, fled to Paris. There they took refuge at St. Pierre des
Fosses. The relics of St. Maur were of course taken along, and lodged in
that house. Later they were transferred, I think in the 17th century, to St.
Germaine des Pres, which then became the center of the cult. As I understand
it, the Benedictine reform which generated among other things the scholarly
society of Maurists, originated with monks of St. Germaine, and thus took
the name of the patron of their church. I may be wrong on some of these
details but essentially I recall that this is the convoluted story of how
the Maurists got their name.

is this the reason why he was chosen to be the patron of the great
17th-18th cc "Congregation" which bears his name and which was responsible
for
a remarkable revival of the Benedictine Order --and, coincidentally (via
Mabillon, et al.), the foundation of modern medieval studies?

he introduced Benedict's rule of life to France.
or was it for this?

or, this?
my understanding is that the center of the "Congregation de Saint-Maur" was
at
Saint-Germain-des-Pres, but i've never heard why it took this particular
saint
on as patron.
enquiring minds want to know.
