Dear Sheila,
I wasn't able to access the debate via the link you sent, but, if anyone
else has any difficulties they can also get to it by going to
http://www.parliament.the-stationery-office.co.uk/pa/ld199900/ldhansrd/pdvn/
wednesday/index.htm - where the languages debate is seventh on the index.
(as the address is so long, it's probably easier to cut and paste, as the
email system may not recognise the full string.)
best wishes
Jean

Subject: Lords on Languages
Dear Colleagues,
There was a debate on the Nuffield Report and on language teaching in
the
UK on Wednesday in the House of Lords: it can be read at
http://www.parliament.the-stationery-office.co.uk/pa/ld199697/ldhansrd/p

It makes pretty depressing reading, unless one wants to find
encouragement
in the mere fact of the Lords' being interested. One good aspect,
however,
is that German is referred to often, and several speakers make arguments
for not concentrating solely on French.
Best wishes,
Sheila Watts
