I am currently researching a short review article for the Journal of Animal
Science about the evolution of modern artiodactyl livestock (cattle,
sheep, goats and pigs). It will be a “Artiodactyl Phylogeny for
Dummies” sort of thing. I’d like to describe artiodactyl phylogenies from
Diacodexis to the current species, much like we have from Hyracotherium
to the modern horse. I realize that the picture isn’t quite so clear for
the artiodactyls but I’d like to do my best. In this regard, I have
a question that you in the zooarcheology community may be able to help me
with.
What are the oldest known fossil remains of the modern domestic
species (Bos taurus, Ovis aries, Capra hircus and Sus scrofa)?
I’d appreciate any references to the original and or most complete
descriptions of these species. Is there anyone in particular who I should
contact on this question? Thanks in advance for your help.
