Dear ZOOARCH list members,
I am an all-but-dissertation status doctoral student in clinical psychology
dedicating my final thesis to the history of human-other animal relations,
prehistory (e.g., re. Upper Paleolithic Era art/analyses of same) to present,
inc. historical perspectives, theories re. the human/other animal bond,
physiological/emotional consequences assoc. with this bond for humans, and
animal assisted therapies. A literature review of these domains (I hope) will
lend credence to my stance that human/other animal relations are highly
relevant to the field of psychology, yet, with few exceptions, not
incorporated into undergraduate/graduate psychology depts.' course offerings.
Currently, I am seeking information re. past/present courses offered - in the
US and abroad - that address the topics noted above, as well as the
willingness of relevant professors to share their curriculum outlines with
me. In this vein, I have obtained a copy of "Animals and Society Courses"
from HSUS, which was last updated in 4/01. While I am particularly interested
in learning about which psychology depts. provide classes and/or applied
training in the area of human/other animal relations, I would greatly
appreciate the views/experiences of those in other disciplines re. this
matter. Further, I wish to ascertain who may be so gracious as to partake in
a possible interview re. the decision to teach a course(s) about the
human/other animal bond; experiences assoc. with same, inc. receptivity of
collegues/students, obstacles encountered, recommendations, etc.
Thank you very much in advance for all comments/info. I look forward to your
responses with utmost eagerness.
Sincerely,
Christl Skoczek
