It's to stop people from bootlegging Billy Joel concerts. IMHO Sony
products can't be trusted any more due ot their vested interest in
upholding crypto-fascist copyright regimes.

I offer a caution from one who has been caught out - beware of Sony
minidisc recorders with NetMD software, which (for copyright protection
reasons, they say) do not permit saving of field-recorded (live
recording using microphone) files onto your computer. As far as I know
there is no way around this except analog copying of the minidisk file.
There is a campaign to persuade Sony to change this policy
