'It does require a lot of motivation (and other things) to be an online

Can I add to this: A lot of motivation is required not just for online
learning, but to complete any on- and off- line task one sets as
self-imposed goals (from washing the dishes to doing research). And, as with
any of these tasks, there are ways in which we as individuals or with the
help of someone who knows more about the subject or can help, can increase
our levels of motivation.

It does require a lot of motivation (and other things) to be an online
learner. However, I think the great majority of uses of VLEs will be to
complement, not replace, face to face teaching.
