And Allan Reese was duly elected! That indicates how self-centered the RSS
has become. But why should us ordinary mortals believe that more respect
should be given to statisticians?
The statisticians failure to convince appeal court judges is not an isolated
case. Many people are unconvinced by statisticians argument. I have been
a Fellow of the RSS for at least twice as long as Allan Reese, and I am also
unconvinced. In matters such as the probability issues, such as those
raised by the Sally Baker case, I can be half-convinced. But on matters of
statistics of human activities professional statisticians have, to
understate the matter, very limited competence.
The qualifications to be statistician are totally inadequate as far as
statistics as facts about society are concerned. That is a problem for
the professional statistician. And that problem will be exacerbated by
the proposed changes in the RSS Charter that evangelise the 'the science of
statistics'.
