The Science Debate 2002 - Genetics
Dear All
The first 30 people to respond to [log in to unmask] saying they are
interested in attending can attend a panel debate to discuss the latest
developments and controversies in this area of molecular biology. This is a
timely event, with worries being expressed that there is a real possibility
of the first human clone being developed in the near future.
The Panelists
CHAIRED BY JOHN HUMPHRYS, Today Programme Presenter
* Barnoness Warnock, chair of the committee that recommended the
establishment of the Human Fertilisation and Embryo Authority.
* Dr Mike West, CEO of ACT, the US Company who claim to have developed
the first human embryonic clone.
* Dr Michael Jarmulowicz, Master of the Guild of Catholic Doctors and
a full-time consultant histo-pathologist at a London teaching hospital.
* Sir Paul Nurse, Joint winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize for Medicine,
and chairman of the Royal Society's Science in Society committee.
An invited audience of over 200 individuals which will include eminent
scientists (e.g Sir Magdi Yacoub, Sir John Gurdon, Dr Keith Campbell and Dr.
Robin Lovell-Badge); ethicists (Dr Sandy Thomas and Prof Hilary Rose);
politicians (eg David Hinchcliffe) and many religious leaders (e.g. Dr
Donald Bruce) will be taking part in this Question Time style discussion.
They will be joined by over 100 listeners of the Today programme.
In addition to being previewed on the BBC's Today programme, this event is
being televised by BBC FOUR and will be transmitted in an edited format the
following evening Thursday 7th March. It will also be streamed from Friday
on the Today and Royal Society's websites.
The debate is aimed at demystifying this area of science and pitched at a
level that is understandable to the general public.
