THE ROYAL INSTITUTION CHRISTMAS LECTURES
Since 1826 the Christmas lectures, given at the Royal Institution (Ri), have
been demonstrating to young people the wonders of science. These lectures
have been televised for the last 30 years. The Ri, in conjunction with
Channel 4 and Windfall Films, wishes to invite applications for the
Christmas lecturer in 2004.
Applications are invited from eminent scientists to present a series of five
50-minute lectures at the Ri during December 2004, which will be recorded by
Channel 4 and broadcast over the Christmas holidays. Since the lectures for
2003 will be on a physical science subject, those for 2004 will be on a life
or earth sciences topic. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
* Be the holder of an established academic post.
* Be resident in the UK during preparation and delivery of the
lectures.
* Be able to make scientific theory and concepts intelligible
and exciting to a young audience.
* Be able to present in an accessible manner on TV (although
previous experience of TV presenting is not necessary).
* Be prepared to come to London for regular meetings between
June and December 2004 and be available for recording and rehearsals
throughout December.
* Be available mid-July to mid-August 2005 to present the
Lectures again in Japan and Korea (for recording on Japanese and Korean TV).
The lecturer will receive an honorarium, and travel and subsistence expenses
for delivering the lectures.
Applicants should submit a one-page synopsis of their suggested series of
five lectures on a topic of their choice together with a one-page summary of
their CV and the names of two referees.
A panel will draw up a first stage short-list during December and selected
candidates will be invited to submit a short video presentation for
consideration by the panel during February. Final interviews will take place
in April/May 2003.
