I'd second this - and the understatment. He gave a, yes, understated chatty
reading in the English common room at Sydney Uni many years ago - actually
sponsored by the Celtic Studies lot, as I recall. He actually wore a tweed
jacket. I don't really recall what he said but he read (and recited) very
well and everyone thought he was 'just lovely'. And he signed my book with
quite a nice fountain pen.
