Dear Jason,
I think that your troubles may be particular to the US PhD experience.
Here at Sheffield Hallam University School of Engineering, we have 2 Professors ( in the UK meaning
of the term) of Engineering Education and an active Engineering Education Research Group.
It is a multi-disciplinary, group of 15 lecturers and researchers (with mixed electronics,
mechanical, design and education orientations) and has strong links with the universities Institute
for Learning and Teaching.
We also have a design research group - predominantly concerned with sustainability issues. This is
a time of reflection on pedagogy for us - the university is moving to integrate e-learning more
fully with all our subject areas and we are addressing how that impacts on the range of styles in
engineering education ( from the highly structured and 'trad' to problem based learning approaches
).
check our web site at http://www.shu.ac.uk/eng/researchgroups.
best wishes with your quest. It is an important one.
