Dear Colleagues,
Over a year ago, Praveen Nahar (2001) sent a post to PhD-Design that
led to an intermittent thread on scholarly and scientific
communication. Because scholarly communication is the central to the
growth and development of a research field, building the field of
design research is intimately connected to this topic. The responses
to Mr. Nahar's post revealed interesting dimensions of our field.
With the Design Research Society holding the Common Ground conference
in September, the field is taking an important step forward. This
makes 2002 an important time to examine the questions that Mr. Nahar
first brought up on PhD-Design.
We are therefore inviting you to take part in a post-conference
on-line dialogue on the themes of scholarly communication and
building the field of design research. The dialogue will take place
on the PhD-Design list.
To encourage the dialogue, we will be inviting thoughts and
contributions on different issues from scholars with several
perspectives. Some of these will be posted over the next few weeks.
On September 10, the list will be open for response and interaction.
We are posting this note to alert you to the coming on-line dialogue,
and to let you know that a preliminary discussion paper will be
posted to PhD-Design on Wednesday, August 21.
This coming Wednesday, we will post a copy of Klaus Krippendorff's
1998 paper on growing the field.
Prof. Krippendorff is both a designer and a communications scholar.
He earned his Diploma in Design from the Ulm School of Design and he
later took a Ph.D. in Communication at the University of Illinois.
At the Ohio conference on doctoral education in design, Prof.
Krippendorff pointed out that even though design is an older field
than communication, design has made less progress as a research field
and a field of knowledge.
In his paper, Krippendorff (1999) compared the development of the two
fields, asking what design might learn from communication. He
outlined a number of concrete steps that are important in developing
a research field. To open the on-line conference, we will ask, "how
far have we come since 1998?"
In some respects, we have come a long way. In others, we have a long
way yet to go. This is a useful time to look back -- and an important
moment for looking forward.
