The best bet would probably be resistivity profiling. This technique
usually generates good results in situations like this, and we have
used it in several comparable situations (mining trenches & ancient
earthworks) and it is routinely used for profiling landfills. Ground
penetrating radar is also a possibility, but the results require more
processing and it is likely to be more expensive to have done.
If on a tight budget then digging or augering are the only options.
Indeed, digging is the only option which will ever yield completely
unambiguous results!
