Ian's comment reflects a different attitude to mining history and cavers,
ie. mine exploration, on the other side of the Channel - where it is they
who are likely to be shot at. The police in Paris maintain a special unit in
an attempt to stop the speleos entering the souterrains under the city.
For better or worse the mining history community represented by NAMHO has a
long standing link with mining exploration. In the past it has dominated
discussions in Council. There are other factors coming the the fore these
days some of which are still relevant to mine exploration. Good examples
are a code of practice regarding underground archaeology and a revision of
the guidelines on mining artefacts. Both of which should be the subject of
an education programme - working towards the adoption of good practices by
cavers / mine explorers. Abandoned mines will continue to be attractive to
cavers - let's ensure they, and their national bodies, adopt the guidelines
promoted by NAMHO.
