Trevor,
>Can members assist with the titles of books, papers, and authors in
relation to lead mining on the Mendips in the 16th and early 17th century.
>
Gough, J. W., Mines of Mendip, (1930; Revised edn., Newton Abbot, 1967),
remains the only comprehensive account of mining in that area.
>Also titles of any books, papers, info. regarding Sir Bevis Bulmer.
>
You will find all the current sources listed in British Mining No. 57.
Atkinson, Stephen. The Discoverie and Historie of the Gold Mines in
Scotland, MSS dated 1619, published Bannatyne Club, 1825, is the best
contemporary account.
>I am particularly interested in the transition from boles>footblasts>water,
and the migration of miners/smelters between the various lead mining regions
in the 16th century.
>
Kiernan, David. The Derbyshire Lead Industry in the Sixteenth Century,
(Chesterfield, 1989), provides information on the transfer of the new
footblast/ore hearth technology to Derbyshire. See also my papers "Notes on
the development of bole smelting," British Mining No. 55 (1995), pp.
127-138. and 'Medieval silver-lead smelting in Devon,' in L. Willies and D.
Cranstone, eds., Boles and Smeltmills, (1992), pp. 12-15.
