For those of you who did not know ...
The members of the Rasch listserve received this awful message on October
30th from Mike Linacre ...
_______________________________________________________________
Ben Wright suffered a massive stroke early this morning (Tuesday, Oct.
30th).
He is now (5:00 p.m.) in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of
Chicago Hospitals.
He is not conscious and is in critical condition.
His family are arriving in Chicago over the next few hours. His wife,
Claire, is distressed, but facing up to this very traumatic situation.
Your thoughts and prayers would be appreciated.

I refrained from saying anything publicy then as it seemed inappropriate and
I was hoping for the best. But, tragedy has been heaped upon tragedy ...
Mike let us know a couple of days ago ...
Ben Wright's wife, Claire, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 30, of liver
cancer. This had been expected from the time the diagnosis was made of her
condition about 3 weeks ago.
Ben himself is not progressing well in recovering from his stroke. He is
often incoherent. He was with his wife when she died, but it is not clear
that he understood what had occurred.
Claire will be cremated. Arrangements are not yet known.

I like Ben - alot - he gave as good as he got - no nonsense and false
academic politeness - straight in to the jugular and with boots on! - we
exchanged some private emails a year or two ago regarding measurement etc. -
and he helped clarify and illuminate many points of difficulty for me. I'm
not writing him off as I refuse to believe a man of such gusto and intellect
cannot "get himself back together" in time.
Anyway, it is possible some members of idanet might also know of Ben and not
be aware of his misfortune. So - just a rather sad update I'm afraid.
Regards .. Paul
