Dear film-philo list,
I am doing research on the two English language versions of Las Hurdes,
Land without Bread, and to that end am trying to get as much information as
possible about ANY English language print or negative of the film that
exists ANYWHERE. I am particularly interested in the origins of the
different soundtracks (different voices, different texts, different music
mix) of these two prints. At this point I only know that MoMA, UCLA and
Harvard have prints, but aside from MoMA's print, I'm not sure which version
is held by whom. The version that is different from MoMA's version used to
be distributed by the National Film Service in NY (anyone know where they
are now?)
If anyone can help me with any of the following information, I would be
extremely appreciative.
The location of extant prints in the US, Canada, UK etc.
Which version is held by whom and when/from whom they were acquired.
(I'm calling them the MoMA version and version 2, though my assumption is
that version 2 precedes the MoMA version)
Any information about the origin, date and making of each of different
soundtracks.
Any information concerning Bu๑uelนs relationship to each of the 2
soundtracks.
Any information concerning projection/ reception/ critical reviews of
the film around the period just after which the prints were made. (aside
from Basil Wright's review which I am familiar with.)
Any sources which acknowledge (and/or comment on) the existence of the
divergent prints.
Does the work Bu๑uel did while at MoMA in 1941-43 exist anywhere (edited
anti-war propaganda)
Absolutely any help or suggestions would be MUCH appreciated.
Thanks, Irina
