Whilst I agree with you that the tag 'postmodern' is simply being used as a
term of abuse in some of these discussions, and I'm not sure that I could
identify an exclusively postmodern film maker, it's not particularly
difficult to identify postmodern elements in films. One of the key
postmodern elements in cinema is a form of irony which shows itself as
deliberately intentional (as opposed to being ambiguous) which is supposed
to make the spectator complicit in the subversion of certain stereotypical
aspects of cinematic form.
The _Scream_ movies are an obvious example of this, although Ithink they are
a particularly unsubtle one. One of the few examples which I actually enjoy
of this is the subversion of the expected product placement in Alex Cox's
_Repo Man_ where, whenever the protagonists buy items from stores, they are
plain containers with labels which simply read 'food', 'beer', etc.
