CALL FOR PAPERS
9th Laterna Film Academy
Pecs, Hungary
September-16th-18th, 2002
REPRESENTATION OF TIME AND SPACE IN FILM
Film Theory and Practice Across Disciplines
Aims and perspectives
Prompted by the success of our conference "Problems of
Representation", we would like to encourage scholars from different
disciplines and applying different methodologies to come together and
contribute to a dialogue across disciplines. This seems all the more
urgent to us when film theorizing is fragmented, many times practised
in closed circles. With due respect to all who do not want to expose
their ideas to general assessment, we once again ask people with an
incentive to share their insights to make an effort at a multilevel
and multidisciplinary debate. This time we propose the following
structure:
(A) in the first two days four independent sessions are devoted to
the theoretical treatment of a particular problem: the spatial and
temporal organisation in the moving image. Papers will be grouped
according to the methodologies applied. Each session will be opened
by a keynote lecture by a leading scholar of the given field. Papers
are welcome from the following fields of interest (special topics are
not exclusive):
A1) Ecological approaches including:
- low level perception of space and time;
- simulating visual perception of space and time;
- the relevance of dorsal and ventral processing of filmic space and
time;
A2) Cognitive approaches including
- spatial and temporal cues;
- orientation in fictional space;
- space and time as structuring principles of filmic narration
- problems of seeing-as;
- spatial and temporal metaphors in films;
- constructing impossible spaces and times;
A2) Phenomenological approaches
- bodily involvement in the spatial and temporal perception of the
moving image;
- phenomenological representations of time and space;
- the phenomenology of the sensible and/or the sensual;
- materiality of time and space in films;
- intuition and filmic space and time;
A3) Film philosophy after Deleuze
- forms of the image of time as thinking in/through philosophy;
- matter and memory in film;
- philosophical problems of continuity:
between images: interpreting the interval, or the impossible cut;
within the image: the long take, or the impossible transition;
- forms of the rhyzome in films;
- time and the crystal;
- conceptual personae as forms of space and time;
(B) The third day is devoted to practice. Scholars all over the
world are asked to submit analysis of either of the following films:
Wong Kar-Way: In the Mood for Love (2000)
Christopher Nolan: Memento (2000)
David Lynch:Mulholland Drive (2001)
We have chosen these films because they are relatively new releases
and have already gained considerable attention and success. Also,
they are sensitive to various kinds of approaches. Each film will be
addressed in a separate session. This time there is no restriction in
the methodology applied, however. We welcome papers, over and above
the four fields mentioned above in the theoretical proposal, from
other areas such as postmodern and psychoanalytic analysis, cultural
and femminist studies, semiotics, etc.
Invited keynote lecturers include
Richard Allen
Ed Branigan
Melissa Clarke
Gregory Currie
Murray Smith
