The quality and relevance of DVD commentaries really
seems to vary greatly disc-by-disc, doesn't it?
The subject films seem not to determine the quality of
the commentaries--which is of course the great problem
with DVD releases in general, right now, with regard
to packaging, extra features, etc...I *love* the
format - but it seems to have favored far more many
moo-veez than it has important cinema...
My favorite commentary thus far - strangely enough -
is the one recorded by Frank Oz on _The Score_ DVD:
precise, informative, technical...
By contrast, I was put off by the directors'
commentary on the _Man Who Wasn't There_ disc...I had
high expectations, I suppose - in consideration of
both the background of the Coens, and of their past
treatment of philosophical questions in past films -
but instead found them flippant & even disinterested
in the film at hand...
I've enjoyed David Fincher's commentaries--they've
straddled the line between fun & business...But, then
again, Fincher's been one of the few filmmakers of
worth to pay attention to the DVD as an archival
format...
