Mike Frank recently queried as to the source of the
much-referred-to concept of women as embodying a quality of
"to-be-looked-at-ness". While the several subsequent posts I've read
mentioning Laura Mulvey are "technically" correct, John Berger's WAYS
OF SEEING -- predating Mulvey -- explores the concept of women as
self-conscious participants in their sometimes-unavoidable role as
objects of the male gaze. While his focus in this book is on static
pictorial representations in the Western cultural tradition, many of
the ideas are thought-provoking and can be easily translated into
studies of film.
Does this help?
