These are serious & dangerous times for liberty in the US (and elsewhere).
Remember, there has long been a fascist element in the US society - before &
during WW2, for example. Perhaps every generation has to struggle with the
notion of "liberty" and "security"? Neither are fore-ordained, imho,
because there is no sense of the absolute "ideal" either in nature nor in
society. Because humans have the capability to think about consequences and
imagine alternative futures; and because their actions can have such
significant positive or negative consequences, it is imperative that we be
constantly vigilant about what we think we want - we or our descendants may
get it.
