United Nations Environment and Development UK Committee
A Vision for Our Common Future:
The UK's Contribution to Earth Summit 2002
Tuesday 22nd January 2002, 9am-5pm The Brunei Gallery, SOAS, Russell
Square, London
Introduction
As the pace quickens towards the September 2002 Johannesburg Summit, this
high-profile event is a stocktaking piece of UNED UK's multi-stakeholder UK
Preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development - Earth Summit
2002.
The Aim
This new event follows on from UNED's March 2001 national conference, where
ongoing multi-stakeholder working-groups were launched to prepare the UK for
the Johannesburg Summit. Ten months later, on the eve of the first
substantive global preparatory meeting for the Summit (United Nations 2nd
Preparatory Committee Meeting for the World Summit on Sustainable
Development in New York from January 28th to February 8th, 2002), where the
key issues for the Summit will be decided, it is now time to report back on
national preparatory work to a UK audience.
Hear what the working-groups have been up to. Participate with a diverse
audience and discover the extent to which the UK is preparing for WSSD.
Influence others, and let your views be known before teams of NGOs and
Government representatives leave for NY.
Key issues
( What should Earth Summit 2002 be trying to achieve?
( What is the UK Government's position as it leaves for PrepCom 2?
( How can Civil Society influence and ensure a progressive outcome for
Sustainable Development in the UK and internationally?
( Can we have a UK multi-stakeholder position at Johannesburg?
( Can stakeholders have an effective joint-approach and propose a consensus
on Sustainable Development in the UK?
( What is the future of the UK process beyond WSSD?
The Day
After a briefing by Rt. Hon John Gummer MP*, the morning session will focus
on the work achieved by UNED's ongoing working-groups. The groups have been
focusing on the diverse issues of Biodiversity & Natural Resources
Conservation; Energy & Climate Change; Population & Sustainability;
Sustainable Cities & Communities; Sustainable Production & Consumption, and
The UK in the Wider World, all of which are headline-issues for the UK, and
are closely linked to the international agenda. There will also be an update
from the UNED-led Education Task Group.
The afternoon will be launched by Jonathon Porritt who will chair the
Stakeholders Vision for WSSD session. Key stakeholder groups will be
represented and have the opportunity to present their visions and
expectations in preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable
Development.
The day will be concluded by a keynote speech by Rt. Hon Michael Meacher
Minister for the Environment after which the debate will be open to the
floor.
