CHARLES CLARKE APPOINTED EDUCATION SECRETARY
Charles Clarke has been appointed Secretary of State for Education and
Skills, following the resignation of Estelle Morris. He is MP for
Norwich South and Labour Party Chairman.
Mr Clarke is a former education Green Minister in the Department, where
he strongly supported education for sustainable development (ESD) and
the work of the Sustainable Development Education Panel.
As Schools Minister (1998/9) he steered the National Curriculum review
process, and raised the profile of ESD in Parliament. Speaking in an
adjournment debate in the House of Commons in October 1999, he said:
I strongly believe, as do the Government, in educating children about
sustainable development. It needs to be at the core of the education
system. That is why we established the Sustainable Development
Education Panel, which has worked very hard and produced a stimulating,
wide-ranging first annual report, covering all phases of education and
training and all types of informal learning.
