International round-table discussion on Farmers of the Future
International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF)
7-10 May 2002 at ICRAF Headquarters in Nairobi (Kenya).
ICRAF and its partners have been initiating activities with schools as part
of their agroforestry research and development activities. These
experiences have raised an interest and enthusiasm within ICRAF for the
opportunity of linking agroforestry and integrated natural resources
management to basic education. For this reason, ICRAF's Training and
Education Programme has recently initiated a new initiative called 'Farmers
of the Future'.
Through its innovative Farmers of the Future initiative, ICRAF intends to
facilitate and contribute to institutionalisation of agroforestry and
integrated natural resources management at primary and secondary school
levels. In so doing, we believe that we can make education more relevant to
the needs of rural youth, and that we can reach the farmers of the future
while concurrently influencing the farmers of the today.
This round-table will synthesise experiences and lessons in relation to the
education of integrated land management, agroforestry, water management,
farm output management and environmental management in primary and
secondary schools.
