Programme launch - interdisciplinary research into sustainable
technologies
1. You are invited to a seminar launching the next round of funding under
the Sustainable Technologies Initiative (STI) and the Sustainable
Technologies Programme (STP). The event is in Manchester on November 20th
and is being hosted by BBSRC, DEFRA, DTI, ESRC and EPSRC. It will include
workshops, networking, case studies and information on how to apply to this
programme. Through the STI, up to 50% funding for research that can improve
business sustainability can be accessed. The ESRC STP provides 100% funding
for a parallel programme of social and economic research on sustainable
technologies. The STP is an integral part of the STI and funds research on
the social and economic processes that shape, foster or inhibit more
sustainable technologies. Technologies offer the means of radically
improving resource productivity and reducing the environmental harm of
economic activity, but the development and use of sustainable technologies
will depend on the attitudes, incentives and capabilities of people and
organisations.
Key themes for STP under this call are:
. Innovation of radically improved, resource efficient processes and
products
. Information and communication technologies, the knowledge economy and
sustainability
. Technology and social inclusion
. Uncertainty, risk and trust
. Policy instruments and frameworks
2. Special support for interdisciplinary projects
Creating business opportunities through improved industrial sustainability
often means seeing things in the round - matching technologies with markets
in novel ways while taking into account public attitudes and regulations.
Many technologies that promise to produce sustainability benefits fail to
make an impact because social and economic drivers have not been properly
taken into account. This is why collaboration between business, and
physical and social science research is so important. Both STI and STP
expect to make significant investments in interdisciplinary projects in this
round of funding.
A key aim of the current round of funding is to encourage more adventurous
and holistic approaches in research. The STI coordinator, working with the
STP director, will be providing extra support for partnerships with ideas
for interdisciplinary projects in this round. This will include help with:
* Developing ideas for interdisciplinary projects
* Creation of project consortia
* Finding ways of securing the required matching funding
If you have an idea for an interdisciplinary project, please do get in
touch. Email us a short description of your idea, indicating whether your
idea is to be kept confidential or not. Ideas should be submitted before
the official November 20th launch in order to get the ball rolling.
