I am writing on behalf of Global Vision International, a UK based
organisation that sources volunteers to international charities, non-
profits and research organisations. Since 1998 we have sent over 200
volunteers to join overseas research projects.
In addition to placing Volunteers alongside field scientists we also
provide funding for research equipment, professional staffing and
training. Global Vision International has applied to the UK Charities
commission for charitable status and expects registration by 2002.
This September sees the launch of an exciting new project run in
conjunction with Rainforest Concern, a leading rainforest protection
charity. Located in the Santa Junin Reserve, Ecuador, located in the
foothills of the Andean Mountains this pioneering group of Volunteers will
build cloud canopy research bases, liaise with local communities to
establish working protocols and will conduct pilot biodiversity studies
investigating:
i) Medium to large mammals
ii) Bird species.
iii) Plants, with the emphasis placed on tree species.
iv) Amphibian and reptiles.
It is estimated that more than 2000 plant species are present within the
reserve alone, many of which are endemic or endangered. There are also
approximately 300 species of birds and a variety of other exotic animals
Previous environmental impact assessments have revealed approximately 30
species of threatened animals in the area including: Jaguars, Pumas,
Ocelots, Spectacled Bears, Howler and Spider Monkeys, Plate-billed
Mountain and Toucans.
Research findings and data will be made available to Rainforest Concern,
local universities and protection bodies including The Rainforest
Information Centre and Rainforest Rescue. While no experience is
necessary, as full training is given, we are particularly interested in
recruiting students from the fields of environmental sciences, zoology,
botany, biology and other such related degree courses. We recruit between
40 and 60 Volunteers a year.
If you think that any of your current or previous students, members or
friends might be interested in joining this expedition I would be very
grateful if you could pass this email on to them so that they may visit
our website at www.gvi.co.uk , or so they can contact us directly to
request more information. If you are interested I can also supply further
information in the form of:
1. Expedition / Project Briefs for interested students / postings on
career / university information sites.
2. Full Project Summaries
3. Talks and Presentations by project staff and ex-Volunteers. Please
contact me directly if you would like us to present our work.
If you would like to use our website, http://www.gvi.co.uk as a link
please feel free to do so.
I sincerely hope that you can help our work in Ecuador by assisting us in
our search for high quality volunteers. If you have any further questions
please do not hesitate to contact me directly. Please note that if you
arrange a group of 10 or more for an expedition your contribution is
covered by the Global Vision International Charitable Trust.
Thank you for your time.
Kind regards
RICHARD WALTON
