Diabetes Trials Unit, University of Oxford
D.Phil. research studentship 2002-5
A graduate studentship in medical statistics, leading to the degree of
Doctor of Philosophy, is available in a clinical research department of the
University of Oxford. The project will investigate the relationship between
different measures of blood glucose level and the risk of coronary heart
disease and other complications of type 2 diabetes. The student will learn
to write computer programs to develop new statistical models, and to fit
the models to data gathered by other groups in the Diabetes Trials
Unit, including the internationally reputed United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes
Study (UKPDS). The project would suit a statistically-trained researcher with
an interest in medicine, or alternatively, a
medical graduate with excellent statistical skills.
Full funding is available.
Applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 class honours degree,
or equivalent. Essential skills
include statistical training, the highest degree of computer literacy, the
ability to communicate scientific concepts in English, and the
motivation to complete a degree by research.
Also desirable, but not essential, would be an interest in medical research,
and any relevant experience.
