*yawn*
I'm sure the message was forwarded in good faith but there is no such thing
as an Email virus that can wipe your hard drive just by you opening the
message.
viruses come as file attachments to an Email and in order to have any effect
on your system they require you to open the attachment.
opening a message will not by itself open a file attachment.
to avoid getting infected by a virus simply don't open file attachments
which you are not expecting and which do not come from some one you know and
would expect to send you file attachments.
be particularly careful when an attachment has the 3 letter extension .exe
as this means it is a programme rather than just a document.
many recent viruses have filenames containing charactors like .jpg or .doc
to trick you in to thinking they are infact a photograph or a Word document,
so look only at the very last 3 charactors.
and of course it should go without saying make sure you have anti virus
software installed and kept up to date.
this needn't be expensive there are a number of free anti-virus packages on
the market which while not as flexible as the pay for products do just as
good a job at alerting you to the fact that certain files are infected and
should therefore be disgarded.
finally if you think you may be infected don't Email all your friends to
tell them about it or you will very soon find you don't have any.
best wishes
