I had a query from my surgical colleagues this morning regarding a 20yr old man with a large fluid-filled cystic swelling on his right hip. He was involved in an RTA several years previously and since then has had occasional episodes where this cyst swells up and requires drainage.
The surgeons want to establish whether the fluid is from within the joint or whether there is any connection with the circulation etc before they attempt to sclerose it.
Are there any markers specific for joint/synovial fluid? We have checked glucose, urea, creat and total protein all of which were similar composition to serum. Protein was lower, but from what I've read I gather that synovial fluid protein is generally 25-30% of the serum concentration.
Any other suggestions would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
