The recent discussion on the mailbase about the annual review bloods in
children with cystic fibrosis prompts me to pose a related question about
the most appropriate investigation of possible vitamin D deficiency. If, as
we generally believe, it is the endpoint of a deficiency rather than the
serum levels per se that we should be trying to assess, shouldn't we really
be looking at PTH not vitamin D ? Put another way, in the absence of
secondary hyperparathyroidism does it really matter what the serum vitamin D
is at a particular "snapshot" in the year ?
