At Kidderminster we stopped measuring both routinely over 10 years ago, with the full support of both hospital consultants and GPs.
A member of staff recently did a project for her MSC re looking at current data, and found that if you measured both, out of 5000 patients, in only 120 did the addition of urea make any difference to the interpretation of the creatinine.
It was also very helpful in giving us confidence in our reference ranges too.
We have an agreed set of criteria on which we will add on a urea, by this only accounts for around 6% of our Electrolyte and Creatinine workload.

Hello all !
I would be interested to know if any laboratories have tried stopping measuring urea in favour of creatinine, as part of a larger panel ('urea and electrolytes') or otherwise.
I would be interested to hear of any positive of negative experiences.
