Dear Colleagues,
Following a discussion with an endocrinology colleague I am after advice
for distigiushing between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, particularly in young
people. Apparently the number of very young type 2s is increasing
dramatically and the clinicians are after laboratory support for their
clinical decisions. This may include review after placing a person on
insulin on the presumption of type 1 because of age.
Obviously anti-GAD or anti-islet cell antibodies can be useful as can
insulin measurements although interpretation of the latter may be
influenced by the "honeymoon period". Does anyone have experience with
insulin, C-peptide, HOMA-IR or similar in order to assist with making this
distinction.
Many thanks in advance,
Graham
