After doing scalp vein pH in the lab for several years on a Bayer 278, and
after pressure from our medical staff to have an analyser on-site in the
Birthing Unit, we installed a Bayer 248. The main reason for choosing this
analyser was its relatively small sample volume requirement (down to about
40 uL if I remember correctly). Base excess is also required, therefore
pCO2 must also be measured - no problems there. So far this analyser has
worked quite well and has been accepted by both the ward staff and the lab
staff (who perform the maintenance).
