Normal blood volume is 3L and cardiac output is 4-5
litres/min, which means whole blood passses through
the pump twice in nearly 1.3 min. At this rate, proper
mixing of any infused fluid would certainly be
achieved
within 30 min. The dilutional effect of any infused
fluid on biochemical/haematological tests dpends
largely on its volume and consituents. Therefore
caution should be exercised when interpreting such
results especially after massive transfusion where the
biochemistry results would be mainly those of the
infused fluid rather than the patient's own.
