I sympathise, Gary, but I suggest that there is a place for
accessing and discussing colleagues' experiences with equipment
which may add very useful information to in-house evaluations or
help in planning or preparing tenders.
It has always happened in a fairly informal way, but it seems to be
getting more frequent; we've certainly had a lot of approaches
recently from colleagues considering equipment purchase, and
requesting a visit or phone discussions about our views on
equipment in regular use here. As equipment becomes more
complex, I'm sure that sharing experience will be an increasingly
important part of decision-making. Of course that would include
some negative information too, which isn't quite the advertising you
fear.
We recently discussed this with Steven Vandyken in connection
with the draft guidance the NHS Purchasing and Supplies Agency
produced on procurement of some POCT equipment, and how it
could be made more systematic.
What is the appropriate use of the mailbase for such discussions?
