Subject: NHS Modernisation Agency: Critical Care Programme. Meeting, 11 June
Date sent: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 16:49:47 -0000
A report on Adult Critical Care services in England was produced
by the Modernisation Agency some time ago:
http://www.doh.gov.uk/pdfs/criticalcare.pdf
Colleagues who have seen this will be aware that mention of
Pathology is very sparse indeed (para 67); there was no Pathology
involvement in the preparation of the report as far as I'm aware, nor
in the groups established to implement the recommendations. On
the national team there is a medical representative and a nursing
representative - who represents nurses plus all AHPs and
scientists.
Fran Woodard (a physio) set up an Advisory Group last year for
AHPs to contribute to work on the Critical Care Programme and
asked healthcare scientists to join later. It's therefore to her credit
that we are involved at all, albeit very late. I joined the Group in
January, along with Dominic Cox (Clinical Physiologist in ITU at the
Royal Free) and Alan Wainwright of the IBMS. Unfortunately, a
paper which the Group was preparing on the contributions of AHPs
to Critical Care had its last draft frozen in mid-December, so there
is no mention of the significant contribution scientists make to
Critical Care other than a statement in the Introduction, which is all
that we could get in at that stage, and a promise that we will be
fully included in the next edition (not clear when/if there will be
one).
The ACB is aware of all this and as requested, I have been passing
details to the Scientific Committee.
Fran has organised a one day meeting in London on 11 June for
AHPs and scientists, to promote the paper, so that is another
opportunity to get involved. Information is on the Critical Care
website
http://www.modern.nhs.uk/scripts/criticalcare
Go to EVENTS.
I am aware that some pathology departments around the country
have been involved in some local network projects in the
programme (see brochure link on website), and we are beginning
some here. I'd be interested to hear of any others.
If anyone would like more info, please contact me.
