There are 2 possible answers:
1) Rat work shows that there is greater cholesterol-lowering activity of
taken at night.
BUT when you look at the data it was a very badly doen experiment and the
overlaps were so wide this provides no real evidence.
2) During the day you eat and food contains cholesterol - so there ought to
be a greater cholesterol-lowering effect if you take the pills at night when
the liver must be making more cholesterol because you aren't eating.
Souns Good but not entirely convincing.
FInally, it depends on which statin. All except atorva have half lives of
approx 2 hours - so this could fit with the noctrnal suggestion but atorva's
half life is 36 hours - so doesn't matter when you take it.
I always tell y patients to take it when they can remember it best - this
seems not to have any significant influence on whether they reach target.
