Is it becoming routine practice for most laboratories to measure serum 25 OH
Vitamin D, along with Vitamins A & E in the annual assessment of all
patients with cystic fibrosis?
At present we don't do this, although we have had a recent request on an
adult patient and one of our paediatricians has previously mentioned the
need for this test. 'The Standards for Clinical Care of Children and Adults
in the UK' report, published by the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in 2001, states
that Vitamin D measurement should be included in the annual review. It is
known that patients with CF are at increased risk of developing osteoporosis
and may need supplements to maintain their Vitamin D level within the upper
reference range. It seems that a bone profile is insufficient. It all sounds
feasible, but I would like to know whether it is evidence-based, since it
would result in a significant increase in our Vitamin D referrals.
