Hi Joan,
I have problems persuading one of my consultanat
obstetricians that base excess is a good idea - he
says he only needs a pH and why can't he have his nice
Corometrics pH meter back? I have had enquiries from
other obstetricians, but they usually blanch when told
of the increased costs. Some blood gas analysers have
stability problems with lactate electrodes, and they
seem to be easily poisoned. We have lactate on our IL
Gem Premier in ITU and it has proved extremely useful
in a couple of cases. We are in the process of
collating information for an audit as to whether
lactate is cost effective.
Best wishes
Jan
